Avira – Computer Users Trust Brands and Detection Rate for Buying Antivirus

Avira, an IT security specialist, conducted an online survey in May 2009 wherein it found that computer users trust only established brands and detection rates of these software for solutions.

The survey's results showed that 34% of participants believed trustworthy and long established brands for choosing virus protection. Around 33% of participants claimed that they took their decision after comparing virus detection rates of tests conducted by them independently.

The survey further revealed that 16% of users had taken advice of their friends and acquaintances before they purchased virus protection system. In contrast, majority of respondents opted for a virus protection system on the basis of their familiarity with brand or detection rates. 6% of users focused on additional features of the system.

The participants also expressed their opinion about additional features a protection system should have apart from securing computers against online threats. They believed that antivirus software should have functions like firewall, online backup and other online features such as protection against adware, spam, spyware, phishing and dialers.

With regard to online threats wildly hovering on the web, consumers demonstrated a high level of understanding of security threats. Only 6% of users admitted of not having virus protection on their systems. However, 5% of users claimed that they took external features into consideration while selecting the antivirus application, such as intuitive and transparent interface.

The real problem was casual and home users who accessed social networking websites, personal e-mails accounts and web on their systems, said the study. Hence, the study highlighted the urgency of thorough information in order to avoid loses from malware and phishing attacks.

Various researches showed malware infection rate at over 89%, with the UK leading other countries by having the maximum number of infected machines.

Moreover, educating computer users how they could keep their computers protected is even more difficult in an environment when antivirus vendors are facing problem to keep pace with e-mail viruses and malware, and security applications are leaving viruses undetected, said the security firm Commtouch.
