Cyveillance Ranks US as the Top Malware Distributor in H1 2009

Security vendor Cyveillance has recently released its Cyber Intelligence Report for H1 2009, according to which the United States and China continue to host the bulk of malware executables. These two countries represented a total share of 54% of malware binaries in H1 2009.

Though, on the basis of separate analysis, Cyveillance discovered that the United States was the top malware hosting nation in H1 2009, hosting the maximum number of malware executables (33%) during the period. It is noted that the maximum number of malware hosting locations in the country in H2 2008 was 30%, which indicates that the number of malware suppliers and malware hosting sites surged during the first half of 2009.

China stood second in the list, with 21% malware hosting locations in H1 2009. The United Kingdom follows at the third spot. The report from Cyveillance suggests that the malware hosting locations in the UK stood 6% in H1 2009, same as that recorded during H2 2008. This depicts that the malware hosting locations in the country have remained unchanged in the first six months of 2009.

Fourth rank in the "Top malware Hosting Locations, H1 2009" has been given to Germany. Like the UK, number of malware hosting locations in Germany too has remained unchanged. This indicates that there has been a slowdown in the number of Internet threats evolving in the country in H1 2009 as compared to H2 2008.

Fifth-ranked Russian Federation has retained its position by accounting for 3% of malware hosting locations both in H1 2009 and H2 2008. Sixth, seventh and eighth position goes to Korea, Romania and Brazil respectively. Korea registered a fall in malware hosting locations from 4% in H2 2008 to 2% in H1 2009, while during the same period, Romania's malware hosting locations surged upto 2%. Brazil recorded 2% malware hosting locations in H1 2009 as compared to 3% in H2 2008.

France recorded just 2% of malware hosting locations in both H2 2008 and H1 2009, whereas Netherlands, with 1% malware hosting locations in H1 2009, stood tenth in the list.
