NuLink Consumers Asked to be Wary of Phishing ScamAs per the recently published news reports, a phishing e-mail scam is targeting online customers of NuLink's services in Newman. The news reports reveal that the fraudulent, phishing e-mail addressing the recipient, tells him that NuLink has found that the recipient has not completed the update or verification process. It further states that the company, which is presently updating its e-mail account system and other database, is therefore eliminating all IGCA Web-mail accounts (NUMAIL e-mail accounts) in order to create free space to incorporate fresh accounts. As a result, the message says that in case the recipient wishes to retain his Web-mail account with NuLink, he should provide the latest details of his account for the update process so that NuLink is aware that the account is valid and currently being used. And just as with other phishing e-mails, this one too asserts for an immediate reply from the recipient who is directed to send his e-mail username and password, and birth date. The phishers in an attempt to lend an element of legitimacy to their e-mail and to scare the recipients say that he will not be allowed to send or receive e-mails in case he misses responding. Furthermore, his e-mail will no longer receive the most updated antivirus service from NuLink's servers, which could expose his e-mail and computer to malware attacks. Consequently, NuLink cautions via its Internet site that the recipients of these kinds of e-mails should not reply to them and they must simply erase them. In a statement, Rodney Riggs, Deputy Chief of the Newman Police Department, said that such types of e-mail scams were very frequent and they mostly sought personal information for identity theft, as reported by Times-Herald on August 25, 2009. The Deputy Chief added that fraudulent, phishing e-mails often emanated from offshore countries due to which identification and prosecution of the perpetrators were difficult for the US investigators. Finally, NuLink advised that if anyone had already answered the phishing e-mail, then he must run a virus scan to avoid malware that could compromise his computer or even cause it to crash. » SPAMfighter News - 9/9/2009 |
