Batelco Blocks Spam Spewing Accounts

As per some reports came on January 6, 2010, Bahrain Telecommunications Company (Batelco) has identified several spam spewing e-mail accounts to clamp them effectively.

A top Batelco official states that many Bahrain residents have become victims of phishing e-mail attacks. In the process, their accounts have been compromised and utilized for distributing spam messages to each of the addresses in their contacts lists.

Ahmed Al Janahi, Batelco Group General Manager for Media & Government Relations, said -the residents also reported that they were receiving an increasing number of junk e-mails virtually everyday, as reported by TradeArabia on January 6, 2010.

Al Janahi also said that people in general remained totally unaware that their e-mail had been compromised. Consequently, these people became accountable for the spam assaults against their relatives' and friends' accounts stored in their contacts list, he added.

Besides, there is a rise in the total number of individuals whom con artists, pretending to be legitimate sources, trick into divulging their personal confidential information. This is made possible because phishers employ even more persuasive techniques that make end-users give away their bank account numbers, passwords, and in several cases, money, said the company.

Al Janahi further states that it is the sheer absence of awareness that results in such incidents. However, end-users can avoid a lot of inconvenience if they become educated about the right things to search for and if they adopt some easy measures of precaution.

In addition, Batelco has posted the relevant details on the company's website to help those who easily get trapped into the spammers' ploys. These details include a list comprising terminologies that end-users may encounter, like Trojan, virus, spyware, phishing, etc. The purpose is to help them easily understand these jargons, which could otherwise prove incomprehensible.

Batelco strongly suggests taking the essential steps to safeguard online users. Thus, people should deploy a package of firewall and antivirus security solutions and update them regularly. They should routinely check their computers for possible viruses followed by clean-up actions.
