US - The Biggest Spam Source in February

A latest study conducted by Kaspersky Lab on 'Spam Evolution' stated that in February this year, the US occupied its place as the world's top spam supplier despite a 7% decrease as compared to the January's figure. Again, in comparison to the pervious month, India stands at second place having circulated 8.8% of total spam, a 2.7% rise.

In February's Top 20, the remarkable event was the reduction in the spam coming from Brazil (-4.7%), Russia (-2.5%) and China (-1.3%). Kaspersky Lab also mentioned that Brazil came down to the ninth position.

Also, the amount of spam coming from Korea and Brazil increased two-fold, placing them at third and fourth places respectively (Korea +3.9%and Vietnam +2.5%).

Remarkably, countries such as Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Japan and Israel that estimate only for 1% of the total spam marked their place in the top twenty. Circulating 2.24% of the overall volume of spam, the twelfth position was occupied by the UK.

In the mean time, the security firm also came up with the statistics of phishing attacks made in the month of February. Recognizing some of the latest trends, Kaspersky Labs stated that the links that lead to phishing websites were discovered in 0.87% of total e-mails, a rise of 0.06% as compared to January 2010.

The security firm, in this regard, said that it recorded a very hastily conducted phishing attack in February 2010. Sent on the behalf of PayPal, the message asked users to verify their private details. But, the hackers did not remember to include phishing link. In addition, the logo of the PayPal was not inserted properly. Instead of the image, there is just a blue strip in the top left-hand corner.

The phishing attacks that target Facebook users give a very professional look. Nobody can find the falsification in the messages' HTML version. But, the attached link which the user is asked to click on has no concerns with the social networking website.

The two most preferred targets for phishers in February were PayPal (53.97%), and eBay (14.05%). The fourth spot was occupied by HSBC (7.65%), while Facebook (6.05%) occupied the fourth position.
