Phishing Attack on Nebraskaland National Bank Customers

The customers of Nebraskaland Bank (North Platt, Nebraska, USA) are urged to be cautious of the phishing e-mails that claim Bank as the sender.

The phishing e-mail to Bank's customers was sent on April 27, 2010 at 7:55 in the morning. The e-mail notified the recipients of Bank's new security message. The e-mail asked the recipients to click on the provided link: message-nebraskalandbank.com. After clicking on the link, recipients were asked to type in their password and other credentials like name, address, and PIN.

Experts describe phishing as an Internet hoax wherein cyber crooks procure sensitive data of people, like passwords, usernames, credit card details, etc., impersonating as a renowned reliable organization like the Nebraskaland Bank in this case.
As stated by Kim Schroll, Executive Vice President, Nebraskaland National Bank, it seems that it was cyber crooks' common attempt to gather passwords and bank account numbers, an effort to execute identity theft, as reported by northplattebulletin.com on April 27, 2010.

Schroll added that the Bank attended calls from all across the nation, including one from an Austin, Texas, based man. This man said that he attended similar e-mails from 9 other banks, and interestingly, this man didn't have a bank account in any of those banks.

So, the officials at Nebraskaland immediately started contacting Internet search engines and security firms. As a result, within just two hours, security professionals blocked the fake website with red alerts. Also, IT security vendors automatically recommended the clients to not to enter those sites.

The experts also recommended the Internet users to follow some simple measures to prevent phishing e-mails. First, users must always remember that requests for contact details and sensitive information will never be made by a genuine bank. So, netizens need to be suspicious of e-mails requesting for such information. If the link(s) provided in the e-mail appear dubious, then better not to click them. Rather, user should first verify e-mail's sender.

Apart from this, users must check their credit card and financial institution statements at regular intervals to ensure the legitimacy of their transactions. If a user feels anything odd, he/she must immediately report it to the concerned financial institution.

This phishing scam by the phishers comes after an e-mail scam that aimed at the customers of National Bank of Blacksburg (Blacksburg, Southwest Virginia).
