Tax Refund Phishing Scam Making Rounds in CanadaAccording to the news published by Fraud-News.com on June 23, 2010, a fresh phishing scam appearing to be coming from Canada Revenue Agency is currently trying to dupe unwary Canadians. However there is nothing new in this Revenue Refund phishing scam, but this time a huge number of Canadians are being attacked. The e-mail, sent to several recipients simultaneously, informs that the recipient is eligible for a government tax refund of up to $386.00, regardless of the different ages, incomes and provinces. The bogus e-mail contains a link which is indicated as "Tax Refund Online Form". Then the recipient will be asked to follow the link in order to access the online form and will be redirected to a website where he can claim the refund. The link terminates in ".cc" domain that points to the Cocos Islands off the Australian coast. Once the recipient is redirected to the fake Revenue Services website, he is required to give all his personal/financial information like banking details and credit card number. All the information supplied by the recipient in the form will then be forwarded to scammers, who will use it for a number of scams including money fraud, spamming, etc. Thus, the security experts have warned the taxpayers to avoid replying to such e-mails. In case of any confusion, they may contact the local revenue services from where the refund asserted in the e-mail can be confirmed. Most importantly, people should always remember that Canadian government never asks for their personal/financial information via e-mails. They should also remain cautious of the e-mails featuring Web links as these links can most probably be a part of phishing scam that directs recipients to a look-alike of an authentic website for stealing confidential information. Nevertheless, if they feel like logging in to the website pointed by the given link, they should do it independently and not by clicking on that link.
