Phishing E-mail Targeting UH, Students being Warned

Honolulu, Hawaii, USA situated University of Hawaii is encountering cyber-criminals who're targeting the school's e-mail users with phishing e-mails, says the ITS (Information Technology Services) office of the university which has been lately distributing notification message for existing as well as former students, published tweaktown.com dated May 19, 2014.

The University of Hawaii (UH) dispatched notification message to all of the school's accountholders, advising them for reporting the credit card firms they subscribed to incase they handed out personal information in response to the scam e-mail.

The e-mail notification that UH dispatched had security personnel cautioning e-mail users about cyber-criminals copying contents from genuine communications or announcements by the campus office for making their scam e-mails appear real. Precisely, the fake electronic mail utilized one authentic Google form containing an alert that the UH does not dispatch unsolicited e-mails which direct recipients to provide their private information.

Sadly, during the days just gone by, alongside UH as an American University, New York USA based Binghamton University too fell target to phishers who sent out spoofed e-mails to B-Mail users i.e. campus inmates of the university asserting that their mailboxes could no longer receive messages due to capacity saturated so the users required providing personal information towards correcting the problem.

But according to the campus 'ITS,' the cyber-attack had from that time been diminished although it stated that the type of e-mail scam wasn't the lone one for the university, which had encountered several phishing scams that semester.

Explaining 'phishing on the Internet,' Logan Robinson an employee at ITS said that it was an attempt for garnering people's personal data by making false pretences. The attack took a credible organization's template and so pretended to be the victim's bank/credit card firm or some donation website, he added. Bupipedream.com published this dated May 6, 2014.

Moreover as per Robinson, 3 B-Mail accounts, if not more, had been compromised leading to over a thousand e-mails getting dispatched onto Binghamton University e-mail ids.

Nevertheless, for remaining safe from the above kind of phishing e-mails, university pupils require adopting good online practices and establish secure web experience.
