Customers of Irish Netflix Warned of a Phishing Email Campaign

Irishexaminer.com published a report on 5th June, 2014 stating that IT security company Smarttech.ie identified the hazard of a key phishing email scam and warned approximately 175,000 users of popular video streaming service 'Netflix' in Ireland.

An email reaches to Netfix account holders instructing them to click on a link contained in the email and to update their credit card credentials. If instructions contained in the email are not followed account holders are threatened that their Netflix account may face cancellation.

The link in the electronic message takes account holders to a fake webpage where they are asked to enter their financial information.

Irishexaminer.com published a report on 5th June, 2014 quoting a comment on the phishing email campaign by Ronan Murphy, Chief Executive of Smarttech.ie as "Phishing scams are one of the most common forms of security threats faced by users. The message may look genuine with the company logo (in this case Netflix) attached with it but Netflix did not send it."

Unfortunately, phishing scammers regularly target customers of Netflix and this version is just one of those phishing campaigns trying to trick Netflix customers to disclose their personal and financial information.

He said that deleting such emails is the paramount way to get rid of them.

If the link in the email has already been clicked, don't enter your financial details and other personal information, he added.

Irishtimes.com published another statement on 5th June, 2014 quoting Mr. Murphy as "users worried about their accounts should contact Netflix directly ignoring the contact details provided in the email."

Murphy stressed that if the criminals could collect sufficient information from innocent victims then they can utilize it for credit card theft and impersonation.

Siliconrepublic.com published a report on 6th June, 2014 quoting Murphy as saying "As a universal rule, one must always be careful of any junk emails or messages seeking personal details or credit card information even if they look very genuine. Also one should never click on any link or attachment which requires updating of credit card credentials."
