A woman from Kolkata tricked by cyber frauds

The cyber fraudsters have found a new method to steal money out of the public, and this time the means is through claiming to be a job provider. Pretending to be a placement agency, the cyber fraudsters are asking the job seekers to fill up one online form for registration by making online payment, and in return, robbing the money from them via fake payment gateway.

In a recent case of fraud, a woman from Salt Lake City, Kolkata, became a victim of such a cyber fraud. The woman was asked by the cyber fraudsters to fill up one online form for registration by paying a meager amount of INR 49 online. The cyber fraudsters then, by making a fake payment gateway, stole INR 49,998 in six transactions from the woman's bank account.

The woman said to the police that she received a call from a placement agency employee, who told her that they have seen her curriculum vitae and her profile matches the requirement of one of the top IT Company. She was then asked to fill up a form online, and was told that she has to make online payment of INR 49. Also, the placement agency employee told her that she would be having her Round 1 of telephonic interview in between 10 p.m. and midnight.

So then on December 24, 2018, the Salt Lake City woman has tried to make online payment of INR 49. However, she was unable to make the payment, even when the OTP she typed was correct. A police source said that "as time passed, she began receiving one OTP after another as she kept trying, but still could not complete the payment. Suspicious, she checked her mini statement and found INR 49,998 was missing from her account".

As per the police, the Bidhan Nagar cyber cell has registered the case, and the probe has also been initiated on December 24, 2018. Bidhannagar, which is popularly known as Salt Lake City, is planned satellite town in Indian state of West Bengal. The police believe that this incident is most common method of phishing.
