Bug Enters The Computer Network Of QEII Health Sciences Center

A computer worm that struck the computer network of Queen Elizabeth (QEII) Health Sciences Center forced the institute to cancel the procedures of its diagnostic imaging systems, as per the news published in The Daily News on 22 February 2007. All systems, comprising CT scan & MRI, X-ray, were shutdown and all of the scheduled procedures being cancelled due to this threat.

The malicious program affected several desktop PCs throughout the district health authority of the Capital.

The virus - affecting nearly 700-1000 PCs - entered bumped on 21 February 2007.

Above 100 appointments were doomed to cancellation, but the emergency and casualty cases were taken care of.

Personal information like the records of patients remained intact. No information was destroyed or damaged and none of the equipments were damaged due to this computer virus attack. Rescheduling of the procedures will be done as immediately as possible. Also, diagnostic imaging services need to be returned to normalcy sooner, as per the QEII health authority in news published by The Chronicle Herald.

All the diagnostic systems were shutdown as a precaution, divulged Geoff Wilson - spokesman with the Capital Health.

"However the good news is that we have identified that this worm isn't going to harm those machines, therefore we can return to normal operations", adds Wilson.

"Our IT experts find it a smart and tenacious virus. It spread at a pretty faster pace", he added. Computer viruses or worms are malicious programs designed to infect and cause harm to multiple connected computers. Once installed, the virus may corrupt or completely wipe the data off the compromised PC.

QEII Foundation is a charitable, non-profit organization set up for strengthening the ability of QEII to offer healthcare of superlative quality throughout Atlantic Canada. The Foundation is a premier institute in health research and provides healthcare to countless Atlantic Canadians per year.
