BitDefender Announces April 2007 Malware in Top Ten List

With increase in the use of sophisticated phishing techniques, many anti-virus companies have reclassified them as malware rather than spam. Therefore by end-April 2007, the situation seemed to be like that of 2004, with mass e-mail viruses - Zafi.B and Netsky.P vying for the highest positions comprising of 10% and 8% of all viruses, respectively.

Although these threats continue to move across the Internet, the top place accounting for an unusual 32.07% of all detections is the uncountable version of the virus Mytob mailer/ backdoor, said Viorel Canja, head of BitDefender Labs in a statement, according to a press release that Theopenpress published on May 3, 2007.

The Mytob version has been actively developing since some time now, with fresh variants striking the Net every week, Canja added.

According to separate news, the topper in BitDefender's March chart, Trojan.Peed variants still managed a position in the Top 10 while heuristically detected Trojan downloaders of every kind came in the sixth place comprising of 3.80% of total malware detections.

The tendency to consolidate seems likely once again. This is evident from the unusually high level of 73.61% of detections that the top ten malwares together capture.

BitDefender's April 2007 list of Top Ten threats consists of Win32.Worm.Mytob.GZ-32.07%, Win32.Zafi.B@mm-10.29%, Win32.Netsky.P@mm-8.27%, Trojan.Peed.Gen-8.02%, Win32.Bagle.GM@mm-6.67%, BehavesLike:Trojan.Downloader-3.80%, Win32.Nyxem.E@mm-1.46%, Win32.Worm.Stration.FC.m-1.37%, Win32.NetSky.D@mm-0.89%, Win32.NetSky.AA@mm-0.76% and other malwares collectively comprising 26.33% of the detections.

The search results for March 2007 demonstrated that there was a fairly even distribution of malware. The top five differed by just half percent. However, the primary objective of the malware was to grab personal information or steal money. Net4now published this in early week of April this year.

The consolidation of varieties of virus will continue to remain in the wild. April's Top Ten List accounts for a sizeable 60% of total viruses moving to and fro on the Internet. Researchers expect to find the Internet form of 'natural selection' in force, with some successful species beating the less successful items heavily, Canja said. BitDefender published Canja's declaration in news in the early week of April 2007.
