India – The 18th Largest Spam Originator in the World, Reports Symantec

As per Symantec's report on Internet Security Threat, in the later half of 2006, 76% of Indian e-mail was actually spam. Also, India is at 18 position in the world for originating spam.

Moreover, Symantec stated that they had detected around 277 active bot-infected machines each day in India. They also concluded that 60% of the top 50 malicious codes that were found in India contained threat to confidential information.

According to THE HINDU on May 25, 2007, Symantec's managing director for India and SAARC said that it is nothing else but money that instigated many unlawful activities on the Internet. Multiple players, who were experts in phishing, spamming, and control of bots, had evolved a sophisticated 'fraud food chain' for conducting malicious activities to cheat and attack those customers whose computers were used as the source of spreading more 'Malware'.

Symantec reports had identified countries which had the greatest number of malicious activities breeding from their networks. U.S recorded 31% spamming activities and was ranked first in the list of countries with the greatest amount of malicious activities developing from their network. U.S was followed by China with 10% spamming operations and Germany with 7%.

Symantec has also traced the business of these pilfered sensitive information and data, which are often sold on underground economy servers. These underground servers are owned and used by cyber criminals to sell information, for further use in identity theft, which includes e-mail address social security numbers, personal identification numbers (PINs), credit cards and social security numbers.

The report notes that during the second half of 2006, 51% of the known underground economy servers globally were found in U.S.

Symantec has prepared a six-monthly report (from July 1, 2006 to Dec 31, 2006). This report is based on the data collected from around 40,000 sensors implemented in more than 180 countries.

A general survey by this multi-billion dollar security products and data storage company revealed that more than two million decoy accounts attracts e-mail messages from 20 countries, which allows it to gauge worldwide spam and phishing activities.
