Scammers Targets Xbox Live Users

Xbox Live users, the ardent video games fan, are the targets of a latest e-mail scam. A Website, Xbox Live, allows the members to play Xbox video games over the Internet with other members.

According to the Microsoft, these reports are valid and has assured Next-Gen the adopted measures it has taken up to help protect their subscribers' accounts. NEXT GENERATION reported this on 13 September 2007.

At the first glance, the e-mail may appear legitimate for it comes from Xbox Support (support@passport.xbox.com). The message informs the Xbox Live users that the site has made several changes to the Xbox Live accounts, and to view the new features, the user needed to click on the included link to login and note the changes.

People who open the sent message get a message, which informs about the changes it has made in all the accounts and that the users ought to login and check it out. The message takes the user to a link that takes them to their own user account login page. The link is a duplicate site, which is only revealed when scrutinized properly, and thus leads the scammer to capture the users' information.

The first report of the scam came from an Xbox user named Whagi. He posted his observations on a forum in Xbox. According to the reports, the fraudulent e-mails reached computer users in UK and US.

Microsoft has taken some steps against this new security threat. It is training its staff about every aspect of phishing again and will compensate any user whose account may has been tampered with. It has also offered few advices to the users of Xbox Live.

E-mail from Xbox Live to Next-Gen said that it wasn't a software technology failure. Xbox wanted to assure its customers that its network suffered no security breach. NEXT GENERATION reported this on 13 September 2007.

Meanwhile, Xbox Live recommends its customers having trouble with their accounts to visit www.xbox.com/support, and to go to "Troubleshooting Access to your Xbox Live Account", and follow the instructions mentioned there.
