DEAC - 94% of E-mails Received Last Year were Spam

DEAC, a firm engages in outsourcing IT services, claims that spam surged by 3.4% in 2008. In 2007, the spam were around 91% of total e-mails and in 2008, the figure reached 94.4% in Latvia.

DEAC has examined the flow of e-mail among its clients. The company also discovered that in the last 5 years (2004-08), the number of spam soared by almost 40%.

Security specialists also reveal that the intelligence level of hackers has also risen significantly over the last few years, making it tougher to detect spam when it enter the user's inbox. Besides, the possibility of reaching spam to clients' inboxes has scaled up with rising sophistication.

Moreover, 90% of overall e-mails received by Internet users across the globe are spam and every day around 200 Billion mails of this kind circulate in different corners of the world. The leading three spam producers are Russia, Turkey and the US, which produce around 35% of total spam every year.

Andris Gailitis, DEAC Board Chairman, says that hackers are modifying their techniques and always look for new methods to bypass filters. Now, the techniques are more advanced and developed. The systems copy positive mails and the text is automatically produced in a unique manner, as reported by itnewsafrica on March 27, 2009.

Meanwhile, spam is not just annoying but also creates a lot of difficulties. It can result in heavy losses in millions of Euros to web users in Latvian. No matter users read the spam or not, it consumes time and uses Internet infrastructure and network. Moreover, spam can lead to collapsing of mail systems, minimizes productivity and heavy monetary losses incurred to firms.

As per another South African security firm and Linux specialist Synaq, more than 90% of mails are viruses or spam. The company examines almost 10 Million corporate e-mails each day. The firm informs that only 5% of mails entering corporate network are legitimate.
