Prominent Global Events, Best Opportunities for Hackers, Says Symantec

Asia-South Principal Consultant Nigel Tan for Malaysia-based Symantec Corporation an Internet security firm observes that a prominent method by which cyber-criminals acquire confidential data from Internet users is via crafting phony websites that harbor malware alternatively via carrying out phishing wherein end-users are deceived into revealing personal information. Asiaone NEWS reported this on June 19, 2011.

A new research by Symantec reveals that high incidences of phishing and hacking take place when the world experiences major events for e.g., the tsunami disaster inside Japan or the Royal Wedding in Britain. The danger is more when criminal hackers sneakily pursue Internet users for capturing their sensitive information to be sold on the underground market rather than when hackers such as Anonymous execute operations for gaining publicity.

Says Tan that its big business to sell sensitive, confidential data illegally and that such business competes or even surpasses illicit drug trafficking. He emphasizes that among the 50 most vicious software codes spotted during 2010, some 64% were designed for capturing confidential data. The Star Online reported this on June 19, 2011.

Tan further said that as malevolent operations increased online as well as since modern Internet didn't recognize any border, the considerably rising online attacks worldwide was likely to affect organizations and consumers inside Malaysia, adding that this was worrisome.

Tan explained that humans were prone to know what comprised the latest about a vital world event alternatively to view images related to a tragedy. According to him, hacking miscreants capitalized on this via dispatching e-mails that carried web-links to stories or photographs regarding the tragedy or event. Asiaone NEWS reported this.

Moreover Tan explained that whenever anyone hit on the web-link, he ended up on a bogus site where his PC was infected or his confidentiality hijacked.

He pointed out that it was extremely important that people remained wary as well as learnt the way for safeguarding themselves online. According to him, one required being more discerning about whatever he posted on the Internet since hackers in the wild always searched opportunities for gleaning people's confidential information. The Star Online reported this.
