Phishers Target Romania’s Business Website Wall-Street.ro

According to BitDefender, Wall-Street.ro, the Romanian Website dedicated exclusively to the corporate world, with InternetCorp as its editor was the latest victim of a phishing scam.

Security analysts alleged that several net users got e-mails congratulating them for winning an iPhone. The e-mail seemed to have originated from a site having info@wall-street.ro as its URL.

Moreover, the e-mail said that the Wall-Street group was happy to announce that the recipient was the prize-winner of the Win an iPhone competition organized by Wall-Street.ro. The email further thanked the users for their interest and requested them to participate in future contests, as reported by Wall-Street on October 1, 2008.

The sender of the email is one Constantin Draghici, the organizer of the competition. The security analysts alleged that the sender was phony, and his name did not match with any InternetCorp worker. Furthermore, the message urged the users to visit the Web page for additional details.

Besides, when the InternetCorp team visited the web page, it was not working, so they could not learn about the exact details asked from the users. While the web page was operational, InternetCorp team attempted to trace the domain holder's identity, but it was futile since the owner's details were secured by "whois-guard" privacy protection services.

Vlad Valceanu, Head of Antispam Research Laboratory, BitDefender, asserted that it was Romania's double premiere, as phishers had tried to exploit the logo of an online journal, and secondly they had intentions to commit identity theft and not theft of account details, as reported by Wall-Street on October 1, 2008.

Nevertheless, the Wall-Street authorities assured that its database was neither hacked by cyber criminals, nor e-mails dispatched at random, to e-mail addresses of Romanian subscribers.

According to Wall-Street Newswire's Editor-In-Chief Claudiu Vranceanu, the phishing scam neither has any impact on the online publication of Wall-Street, nor on its subscribers. Wall-Street's publisher InternetCorp has taken prompt steps to prevent any private information theft, and their net security was also not compromised, as reported by Wall-Street on October 1, 2008.

The authorities have cautioned users against opening e-mails or attachments from unidentified senders.
